The Democrats' New Favorite Line

posted by Curt, on August 29, 2008 12:24 pm

I have all the admiration and respect in the world for my good friend, patriot, and concerned citizen John McCain, but [THEN PROCEED TO TRASH INTELLIGENCE, JUDGMENT, AND CHARACTER AT WILL].

With fronds like these, who need anemones!!!

It might be a little disingenuous to attribute this to the Democrats... ever see the comedy bit about saying "bless his heart?" We all do it, I think, at one point or another.

And, to whatever extent a politician doesn't do this, aren't they susceptible to accusations of partisan bickering?

And isn't it often the case that these senators really are friends? Biden and McCain practically vote in lockstep where their major donors overlap--in fact, I was quite disappointed with the Biden pick as he is just as anti-technology as McCain. On the issues that get me most frustrated (hint: not the issues most people cling to), Biden and McCain vote pretty much in lockstep.

But in the center ring of the Presidential circus, one must distinguish oneself from one's opponents, never mind that where differences do exist, they are usually philosophically minor--especially since the disappearance of the small-government Reagan Republicans. Is it really so bad if they occasionally remind us that, push come to shove, they're really all friends in D.C.?

Because I tell you what--they might argue about abortion or gay marriage or war or economics while they're on TV, but when the time comes to fleece the public, they'll put aside their differences and break caviar-slathered bread together.

Oh, I don't think it's disingenuous to attribute this to the democrats. I heard it all last week . . . in remarkable concentration. It would be disingenuous to attribute it only to the democrats, though. And no, it's not really that bad of a thing. It just becomes utterly unconvincing to hear someone trash a friend day in and day out and still call them a friend with a straight face. Because, I don't think that they can trash on each other like this and still be friends. Some forbearance is required for friendship. Apparently not for breaking bread together, though. You're right on about that ;)
